The night of the balloons
There has always been something special about hot air balloons. For decades, festivals have been held all over the world to offer people and families a magical moment. The balloons in the sky offer a magnificent spectacle and an exceptional photo opportunity. Every year, in Austria, in the small village of Flizmoos, there is the winter hot air balloon festival including the famous balloon evening. Yes, that’s right! Hot air balloons at night! In addition, the snowy landscape of the Austrian Alps around the village makes the experience even more magical. Around 6 p.m., several balloons are inflated and light up to the rhythm of the music. A large space near the balloons is open to the public to sing and dance. It is a perfect activity for the whole family. Every year, hundreds of people attend this event. Plan your arrival earlier to find parking near the village. Take the opportunity to visit and stop for a pizza before the show begins. Several restaurants offer coffee and dessert before the show begins. The ski hill parking lot is open until 8pm and is free. If you arrive later, there are some parking lots available before entering the village. You can also get there by bus.

Where to live
There are some accommodations available in the village itself. However, expect very high prices. Within a 30-45 minute drive around Flizmoos offers much more affordable accommodations in a fairly wide price range from $100 per night for a single room to $500-600 per night for a small apartment. Check out hostels with shared bathrooms near Pfarrwerfen and Bischofshofen. For my part, I opted for an apartment near Sankt Martin am Tennengebirge. Affordable, around $500 for 3 nights, 30 – 40 minutes from Flizmoos.
Activities around
In January, the ski season is well established in Austria. Several ski hills are available around Flizmoos. Are you a cross-country skiing enthusiast? Several trails are available in the region as well.
Plan a visit to Hallstatt. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this small village, only a few kilometers long, is one of the most beautiful in Austria. Summer is the best time to admire the beauties of this village but winter will give you the opportunity to visit the village without the thousands of tourists. This will allow you to enjoy the beautiful views, shops, cafes without having to be trampled on your feet.
If you are ready to travel further, go to Solden, the other side of Innsbruck. You will find the famous IceQ restaurant where they filmed the film Spectre, one of the last James Bond films. The view of the Alps is magnificent and if you are a ski enthusiast, you will be pleased to know that Solden is one of the largest ski hills in the Alps.
